DRESS CODES

Dress Codes

Students of all ages and genders are to follow the dress code for all CSDC classes and rehearsals unless otherwise discussed. A uniform look is important for class and we ask that all dance clothing items are made of stretch/lycra and are fitted tightly to the dancers body.
Students are to wear either:
Leotard with Tights, Leggings or Shorts
OR
Tight Fitted Top with Leggings or Shorts

Be sure to review the details below to understand the color and style options for your students program.

3. No buttons, zippers, hoods etc or parts that may inhibit dancing or hurt the student when moving or rolling on the floor
4. Must cover students stomach when arms are raised/moving

CSDC is moving away from the traditional ballet pink tights and shifting towards flesh tone tights for ballet class. Many dance supply companies offer flesh tone tights in a variety of shades that can be found in stores and online. We understand that many students have ballet pink tights from previous seasons and they are welcome to continue wearing their current pink tights for the time being. As your student grows and needs new tights we ask that you transition to flesh tone tights for ballet class.

Warm Ups

It is suggested to wear 2 layers of warm up clothing.

Fitted Warm Up Layer: worn over your base layer of dance clothes (leotard/leggings etc), but are still very fitted to the body. Can be worn for a majority of class on cold days or when a student has an injury. Warm ups can be any color but are not to have glitter, writing, or bulky decorations. Fitted Warm Up examples include: leg warmers, knit warm up tights, fitted sweaters

Bulky Warm Up Layer:
sweatshirt/sweatpants that are big enough to wear over the top of everything else. These warm ups are to be removed after the start of each class so that the instructor can see your posture and alignment. Bulky warm ups can be put back on for the stretching portion of class and removed again when dancing.  Ex: CSDC sweats, ripstop pants, warm up jumpsuit

Hair

A bun is the easiest and fastest way to get hair up and fully secured to a dancers head. Students should practice wearing a bun for class so they have time to get used to making a secure bun as well as the feeling for performances. Students with sensitive heads can try bunheads hair pins. When used correctly these pins will not poke or hurt the students head.

Hair can be worn in any style as long as it is all up, secured to the head with no moving parts. Hair should be done for all classes in a way where it will not fall out during class and need to be re-done. Any hanging hair (ponytails, braids, bangs etc) must be short enough that it does not swing around to hit the student in the face when spotting their head. Students with short hair who are unable to put into a ponytail are to wear a headband or bandana to keep hair off their face.

Shoes

Shoes can be any color for class, however specific styles and colors will be needed for performances. If purchasing new shoes check with your teacher first to see what is needed for your upcoming performance.

Recycle Shoe Donation Box (available by appointment due to covid)
CSDC has box of donated shoes that are free for students to borrow from. There is no color or style of ballet or tap shoe required for class and the recycle box has a variety of colors and styles. However specific color and style are required for performances. Before purchasing new tap or ballet shoes, contact us to see what is needed for the upcoming show.

Purchasing Ballet Shoe Suggestions
Canvas ballet shoes are suggested for ballet classes. Leather shoes are ok for younger students but are not ideal as they don't allow for as much dexterity. Below is a list of canvas ballet shoes in a range of prices.
Theatricals $9 canvas ballet shoes A cheap option of ballet shoe that is not horrible quality! Comes as small as child 10!
Bloch $17 canvas ballet shoes Medium/good level of quality. Great choice for a Footlight student.
SoDanca $22 canvas ballet shoes Many of the Epaulement students ballet shoe of choice. Very comfortable!
Body Wrappers $25 canvas ballet shoes Another fav of CSDC epaulement students. Great shoe, known as the Angelo Luzio shoe.

Purchasing Tap Shoe Suggestions

We understand that tap shoes can get expensive especially when your students feet are growing and seem to need new tap shoes every few months. However we’d like to emphasize the importance of not purchasing the really cheap shoes for your student. The cheaper options often have a stiff plastic sole and make your learning experience more difficult and perhaps discouraging. Some cheaper tap shoes also have small velcro straps that wear out fast and often come undone during class.

Mary Jane Style Tap Shoes
Theatricals $17 buckle tap shoe
Plastic sole is difficult to bend, tap sounds are quiet, and the slide buckle wears out quickly meaning the shoe loosens during class as the shoe gets older. Works for Junior dancers on a budget but I do not suggest them at all! Definitely do not suggest for Footlight students.
Bloch $29 buckle tap shoe Good quality tap shoe for younger students. They have an actual buckle which is secure. Many of the shoes in our recycle box are this brand/style.
Bloch $40 buckle tap shoe Great quality tap shoe for younger students, has actual buckle and made of but on the pricey side.

Lace Up Tap Shoes
Bloch “Sync” $58 lace up tap shoe Medium quality shoe, plastic sole means it’s very difficult to work with, loud tap sounds but edges of taps are sharp corners and sometimes get caught on the floor!
Capezio “Cadence” $66 lace up tap shoe Medium/good quality shoe, leather upper and sole makes it easier to break in and last. Teletone taps have quality sound.
Bloch “Respect” $76 lace up tap shoe Good quality shoe, leather and great sound.
Bloch “Jason Samuel Smith” $163 lace up tap shoe If you want to go all out, these are great shoes! Quality sound, super comfortable.
